oh yes - Al has the builders in...oh dear, oh dear! So, they were supposed to arrive at 8am this morning...but guess what...yup...the MOT on their van apparently was more important!!! So for this challenge we are looking for guesses to see how long they'll take to complete their work...they quoted at 4 weeks. 4 weeks is 20 days as they don't work weekends, so how about we guess in days to match them!! How many days in total do YOU think they'll take to complete the task in hand? The person who matches, or is closest to with out going over, how long it takes the builders will win a long dog lead that will grow by 1' PER week they take, and for the rescue of their choice (I.e. 4' lead if they complete in 4 weeks; 6' lead if in 6 weeks etc.) So the closest one without going over works as below!! 5 days - Al 6 days - Viv 8 days - Murtle and they take 9 days then no one wins, but if they took 7 days then Murtle would have won!!! So - happy guessing ladies and gentlemen Guesses so far; murtle - 19 days mcchell - 27 days petdesigns - 30 days Jazz - 33 days Florrie - 48 days brackensmum - 50 days reclaimingrebus - 55 days Old Dragon (Al) - 60 days macabbie01 - 65 days Dray - 75 days

May I just clarify whether the guesses are the quoted 20 days + how many extra days they go over their quote OR or just how many extra days they take to complete the job, please? ;D

Sorry - the number of days for the guess is how long they take to complete the job!!
I was coming back to be an optimist and say my guess was for 19 days, so one less then quoted!!

ROFLMAO - if anyone thinks they will complete UNDER the specified time! Of course, we will also have to take the weather into consideration! They can hardly lay a concrete slab or blockwork if there's the tiniest, weeniest possibility of a spot or two of rain... Must print out the Metcheck forecast for the next month... Here's the forecast for the next week for a start: www.metcheck.com/V40/UK/FREE/7days.asp?zipcode=CF37%203EY Just had a phonecall - builder's are working up at the boss's house. ;D (Exercising their arms lifting mugs of tea, perhaps?) Seems they don't know now if they'll be there in time for the delivery, but will ring me at lunchtime... Yeah, right! We shall see...

Just had another phone call - ETA for builder's supplies delivery - 30 minutes! Still no sign of any builders, of course! I hope they have some nice, strong men on the truck to offload it...

Well, the builders finally arrived a little after 2pm... and left at about 4.45pm. During that time, they removed three quarters of the roof from the old stables after having cut back rather a lot from the overhanging trees... Oh, and they also got extremely muddy. ;D
They then said they weren't coming tomorrow, as they have two other jobs to complete then, but would return on Friday.
Now, if they would normally call a day 8am - 5pm, which I make 9 hours, if we include their lunch our, I make it less than 1/3 of a day worked so far!
Now, Mary, how would you count the days? Those hours actually worked or the number of days that pass before the job is completed, and from today as the first? ;D

the number of days that pass before the job is completed, everyone knows a builders day doesn't run from 8am -5pm. It's the number of hours they choose to work in the day!!! Even those that they choose to go work elsewhere!!!

Just modified your first post Mary, and to show that the prize is 1 x lead of 1' per week they take to complete, and not sveral 1' long leads... ;D

It is 'Day 3' and the builders plan on doing a 'few hours' today. Had a phone call from my son requesting bottles of pop and Twix bars... Yeah, right... They can have a diluted bottle of squash that I have around and some cheese and pickle rolls... I thought that builders ususally took flasks of tea to work with them?

Oh dear Al. Don't you know you are supposed to make tea every 2 hours for builders.
I'm going for 65 days.

Simple, Dorian - I'm not going to attempt it... but if they'd care to bring their thermos flasks up to the house, I'll boil a kettle for them to have hot water. Day 3 I now consider over, and so far they have demolished about half of the old building. My son is supposed to be fencing off the site this weekend, so they can work without Bronnie and the others assisting, but they've not as yet marked out the area they want fenced! I daresay that I can figure out the footprint needed, plus a bit to allow them to manouever cement mixers/lorries and so on around and work. I have to get the feed shed emptied over the weekend, too, and transport the floor (loose olf scaffoling planks) from there up to the allotment, where I want to use those to make some raised borders for things like salad crops. Under those planks there are several large railway sleepers... ;D I wonder what the builders will have to say about those when they discover them? They weigh rather a lot, and I was hoping to reuse those to form steps down from the car park to the bird garden/dung heap/composting area! I'll try and get someone to take some photos over the weekend, so you can see progress. This is what the old building looked like before they started demolishing it - of course, Merlyn had been demolishing it, bit by bit, for over fifteen years, so it's amazing it was still standing at all!

Maybe if you'd ask Merlyn nicely, he'd demolish it quickly over the weekend??

Alas, he only demolishes things when he's shut inside them, and there's only the feed shed remaining that I could shut him inside now... except it's not empty yet! I hope to goodness he doesn't try to demolish the new stable building, though, when that goes up!
