Today, I dared get on the scales for the first time in over a month. What with the medication I have to take, and difficulties exercising when one has mobility problems, trying to lose weight is a nightmare. No sooner did I manage to lose a few pounds, than something would happen and I'd either have to take steroids or else use the car instead of my feet, and put any loss straight back on again. Either that or I'd be tempted to indulge in something naughty, like a garlic chicken kiev or a fresh cream scone! Anyway, now that Merlyn is stabled overnights, I am hoping that just the act of mucking out and exercising him with help me keep the scales heading in the right direction so, after a month or avoiding those, I took the plunge this morning and weighed myself - 14st 4.6lbs! That is actually a bit better than I feared, as last time I was topping over 15 stones. My challenge to myself will be to keep heading in the right direction. However, your challenge is to guess what my scales will read on Christmas Morning! That whether I go up, down or stay the same! Whoever is closest will win a little parcel of New Year Godies for the rescue of their choice. If anyone else wants to join in the challenge here to lose weight, I've no objection. Indeed, I could do with a bit of whatever the word is that is on the tip of my tongue but not reaching my brain or fingers, and to help keep me going! Summary of Members Guesses to Date:(In weight order.) Reclaimingrebus: 13st. Florrie: 13st 2lbs RuthE: 13st 6lbs. Petdesigns: 13st 8lbs. Kitara: 13st. 12lbs. WarriorNik: 13st 13lbs. I'm gonna prove you wrong, Viv! Grrrrrrrr! (Not sure how, though! If I have to swwep those rough concrete floors much longer, I reckon I'll not be able to help but turn some of the flab into muscle, which we all know weighs heavier than flab!)

Thanks, Jutta. As long as I can keep going in the right direction I'll be getting there! I've added a summary of any members' guesses to date, to help keep track in the first post.

Well, a couple of days without a car and having to walk and carry things to the PO and down to the stables had me tempted to pop on the scales tonight and they read 14st 2.4lbs! (And that is befor attempting to move two lorry loads of bark chip!) I am actually a bit disappointed at just 2lbs, as I am feeling exhausted and the back's giving me gyp, but no car again tomorrow means I have to keep it up another day!

By the time I'd walked down to the stables this morning, seen to Merlyn and the ponies, mucked out, and then walked back again, I was shattered and starving, so probably undid any good work the exercise did by making myself a bacon roll for breakfast! In truth, I could have eaten another one or two, but resisted that temptation. ;D

How does one resist food temptations?? Since I've stopped smoking I've put on nearly 1 stone :-( Despite all the work on the field (we don't have running water there, so I'm lugging all the water - yes, for the swimming pools for the ducks and geese, which are cleaned and refilled daily! It's just my back giving me gyp - just like you, Al! (I'm hungry again.... )

Keep busy, and keept turning over the thought of the extra bacon butty or whatever, I think, Jutta. ;D Remember, we are all powerless over the first thought, but not over the second.

That could make it difficult, Jutta. I am contemplating what to have with some brocolli that needs eating. Scampi ate the chicken breasts that defrosted the other day, and I am reluctant to go up to the Co-Op for fear of temptations in the 10p basket...

I'll go for 13 stone 6. If Merlyn is getting daily exercise is he also going to join in this challenge?

He'll only be getting a half-hour plod, Ruth, and when he can't go out into the field, as actually he's lost quite a lot of weight this autumn, and is nothing like as big as he was. He's rising 24 years now, and I am afraid his teeth have worn down and ceased growing now. He doesn't yet look underweight. In fact, he looks more like a horse his breed and build should look, but, of course, keeping him at this weight from now on isn't going to be easy the older he gets.

My old girl still needed her teeth cut/filed down regularly when she was over 30 years old, like a few other very old horses in her stable. Could it rather be the opposite and he's developed too long teeth (hooked or whatever the word may be in English)?

It is his molars that are worn down, Jutta. He saw the equine dentist a few months ago. Not having a large amount of grazing here, he's had a corn feed daily almost all his life, and that may well make a difference? His father's teeth were the same at his age, and I managed to keep him going a further four or five years.
