I took the following photos yesterday (that's why I had the camera ready when the raven visited us). Haven't managed to identify the butterflies yet - but I hope you enjoy them anyway! It seemed to be the perfect day for butterflies and other insects! The above is a grasshopper or cricket - I'm really miffed the photos didn't come out better as it had really great colouring. This one could be a "speckled wood" "gatekeeper"?

"Ringlet"?? This may be a "red admiral" This one is probably a "small white" (This one sat on my jacket thingy for ages - no idea what it is, but it was fascinating being nearly see-through)

Great pics, Jutta. Love the one of Baine blackberry picking, bless her. Are you, or have you made jam from the ? damsons? My mother used to make loads of jams when I was young and also bottled fruit and made pickles that all lasted long into the winter months. How things have changed, but probably not for the better or healthier.

Picking blackberries is her favourite hobby at the moment - together with munching all the hazelnuts she can find (none on the field this year, but on our morning walk). They're sloes, sadly not damsons. But yes, we (did I say we?? Martin, of course, not I!) make jams out of the Dickerfield-fruits. We've got blackberry jam, Marrow and ginger-jam as well as elderberry syrup (both for hot drinks if one fights a cold and for making jam later on). We've also been eating only our own vegetables (except mushrooms, which we still have to buy) since about June. it's great - and especially the courgettes and runner beans taste so much better fresh from the field! (If I could stop eating chocolate and biscuits, I'd be living ever so healthy! )

I would love a field like yours Jutta. Maybe one day. I do miss not being able to grow our own vegetables. Seems like a dog's paradise too

We got it for the dogs last year (had been our dream for YEARS) - and only decided when we had it that we could also use it to "go green" (partly inspired by this part of TRPD, the woodland and wildlife group and partly by "River Cottage") If we could actually live there/build a little house there, we'd also keep some lifestock. Sadly, that's not possible. Going there is our daily "little holiday".

I am sure that Ari has some old 'hedgerow' recipes, Jutta, and including things for sloes. There used to be a piece somewhere on the board called 'The Healing Apple' from her collection and that gave a recipe or two for crab apples. The one was for a drink using the jelly and that is marvellous for colds. (It really helps arthritis, too. )

We sadly don't have any crab apples - but we will be using the sloes. We've got a couple of interesting old recipebooks But we'd obviously always be interested in good recipes!! (And no, not for sloegin, as I can't stand gin)

Sorry Jutta I'd missed this before but it's fascinating to see what's been growing on the Dickerfield...
We have had lots of fungi this year too...we've been leaving the grass long over large areas, and I think they are coming up as they've not been disturbed.
Shame you don't like gin, Sloe gin is supposed to be really nice...

I think it's time for some more wildlife photos here! The following photos were all taken this month (July 2007), the slugs on one of the many many many wet days, the others on the 9 (!) times on the field when the light was just about good enough and it wasn't raining! First of all the "sluggy horror picture show":
