I know someone who can make two small dog coats and a cat cushion cover from a single old knitted jumper (adult size)! She uses the sleeves for the coats, lining those with something like an old T-shirt, and overlocking the edges to prevent fraying. The cushions are made from the body of the jumper, and stuffed with the wadding from old continental quilts that a local charity shop have had donated, but can't sell perhaps because they have tea stains or cigarette burns. She gets those for 50p each, having asked the people at the shops to keep them for her. All they need then is washing, and any surplus cotton from the outer sides of the quilts and that is intact and clean, can be used for making the cushion pads.
The straps for the coats are made from the parts of the jumpers at the top and between the sleeve settings and below the neckline, and fasten with a strip of velcro.

i knit dog coats there not the height of fashion & dont wash well. i had visions this poor little dog standing there & all the others laughing at him in his home made jumper. & after seeing the proffesionally made ones on here i wasnt confident to offer 1 for the prize box. i will now. They won't be laughing it will be envy - disigner clothing and all they have is the standard stuff ... I also knit/crochet blankets so there seems quite a few of us - maybe when we have enough we could have a thread of our own and get donations from people to send blankets to specific dogs in rescues?? What do you all think?

I hope everyone had a peaceful Christmas and are looking forward to a New Year full of exciting possibilities!!
Despite working all over Christmas ( no children - so I drew the short straws) I have managed to knit another couple of blankets - dark blue this time but still very warm on my knees..
Quite happy to donate them to the VPB or do as Teija suggests and send them to specific dogs etc.
Hope everyone has a wonderful New Year - I'll be working again tonight...not sure how that came about since I drew the short straw again - had to turn down 3 party invitations! Take care everyone. Jane

i'm learning to crochet and its not going well so the vpb will have to wait a while before i can bung anything in. my first project is a hat but i cant get the hang of double crochet - all i've got right is a chain stitch and single crochet unless of course i just wrap the wool round my daughters head mummy style

its finished. its too small for my daughter so i'm taking it up to my little sister when i've put a pink flower on it.
i have a question though, do all crochet patterns work round in a circle?
and are there any set trpd patterns so i can practice with?

This link might help you find someone who can use it to help rescues, and in your area, Jazz: K9 Knitters
