No 5 is still not correct. One of the answers sounds nearly like it - but it's a German dog and a type of Sheepdog / Shepherd. (Amy - no 4 is a dogo argentino )

oh dear... I suppose it is too difficult... it's a "schwarzer Altdeutscher Huetehund" (http://www.vieh-ev.de/Rassen/Hunde/huetehund.html - there's a picture of the "Harzer Fuchs", a similar breed)
What should we do now? Should Julie62, who had 9 out of 10 first, get the prize for the rescue of her choice and / or should I find a photo of another breed and whoever gets that first has won??
(Anneski, I was only given "pointer" as breed name for no 6 - I assumed it means English Pointer, but of course I may be wrong)

great quiz Jutta I think Julie should win the prize I tried translating the German to English, but could only get the first word which means Black, the other 2 didn't work, would guess the last word means something like Hound, but cant think what Altdeutscher would be can we have another pic anyway just cus its fun

I just wondered about the pointer bit, cos of course most countries with pointers do just call them that without the nationality bit in front....and this chap didn't look like he had a deep enough stop for an English - but then I'm certainly not an expert, so who knows!

Congratulations, julie!! Could you let us know which rescue you'd like the Mystery Prize to go to and I'll let Al know? (I'll try to get another quiz together soonish - not this week though as my parents are coming over to visit soon ) Anneski - Of course, when I (being a foreigner) hear pointer, I immediately assume it's an English pointer (the dog on the photo definitely is not one of the German pointers = "Vorstehhunde") as I have most British, French, Belgian, Dutch and German dog breeds in my little head in the name of "their" language, so often don't know what a non-British breed might be called in English... Ah well... Just adds to the fun! Al, schwarzer Altdeutscher Huetehund means "black old-German (or "old-type German") herding dog. They are 'our' original type of herding dog/collie (the dogs the German shepherd was partly 'bred out of'). Sheep in many parts of Germany are traditionally kept in a sort of nomadic way - the shepherd wanders over quite long distances with the sheep which are kept together by those dogs and driven in the direction the shepherd wants to go. E.g. where I'm from the grass on the banks of the river Rhine (quite big - both the river and the banks) is still kept short by herds of sheep being slowly wandered along there. They herd different to e.g. Border Collies (or so I've been told by a German friend who has both, a BC and an Altdeutscher Huetehund). ... another pointless bit of knowledge noone wanted to know...

I'm glad you enjoyed it even with that rather obscure breed in there... I've passed on the details to Al, so St Giles should soon receive a Mystery Prize!
