I see that this morning, Amyjo had to delete another inappropriate 'guest posting', so I would like to know how everyone feels about making this forum only accessible to members?
It's not the first time this has happened. Some relate to 'phishing websites', some to sites where virus or adware downloads exist, others to advertising sites for the sort of junk/porn rubbish many of us get as spam email.
Please post your thoughts here and complete the poll. Thanks.

That can be done, Willowisp.
I am torn over this issue, wanting the forum to be as accessible and welcoming as possible. However, I'm often online during the early hours of the morning, and have seen huge numbers of 'guests' viewing the forum at those times. (Over 100 in some cases.) Some of these guest's IPs are from very distant countries . Fine if it is members on their holidays, or fellow animal lovers looking to share ideas for similar purposes as this group nearer to their home, but I'm led to understand that some may be searching for ID/contact information that they can harvest for inappropriate purposes. Some links that guests have posted lead directly to sites that infect computers with a virus, if clicked on, and the PC owner's AV isn't up to date or powerful enough.

I can see why youre torn Al. I find this forum a very welcoming place as a member. Theres where the key is, people who are genuine will have no qualms in signing up to be a member to post. If they can see, but not post at least they can view to see if they want to sign up or not. Guests posting (some, not all, again, it is the minority that spoils it for the majority) can be damaging for members, as you say they post links which we will follow only to find either unsavoury sites or have an infection downloaded. I think, and im going out on a limb being the only one speaking on this....!!! I think the best way to be is to have the guests just viewing and then to post, join up. Its free, its spam free to do so, and it makes it safer for existing members

I voted Yes, but maybe allow guests to view but not to post....? I can't remember which way I voted, but it was to not restrict, but I think to view and not post is a good option. I personally don't like signing up to forums I can't see what goes on behind closed doors so to speak!! But, from what you say on the sites they link to, it would be good not to have them posting stuff!!!

I have joined several forums lately just so I can bid for items I fancied in their auctions.
I think as others, allow people to view the board but only post when they have signed up.
This seems to be the way most others work and safest for existing members who won't hopefully be subject to dodgy posts.

I totally agree with this (and have voted) as I had to delete a posting this morning (I can only modify though) with lots of links to 'unsavoury' sites. As long as we leave the forum as such to full view it should be fine (maybe it could be said on the main site then why guests have to sign in as members? I'm sure ones that just want to take part in the auction would understand then). Personally, I don't like it if you can only see a couple of things before signing in as then you don't know what you're letting yourself in for.

Every registered member has a right to say what they think, Whipsntails. In fact, it's nice to see members doing so, otherwise the service staff here are working in the dark. ;D

Agree with only members posting; the 'staff' are busy enough without having to spend time checking for inappropraite postings. But the site should remain visible to all because that way guests will know what they are missing out on, more people will see what the stores have to offer, hopefully sign up and buy items providing more money to help the rescues.
