Am wondering about trying garlic powder in our dogs dinners to see if it really does help with fleas etc. We don't have a great problem with fleas ( use frontline spray routinely and occasional Advocate when we can afford it ), but neither are particularly effective against ticks although they should be. Have "googled" and garlic is suggested for tick prevention and wonder if any of you have any comments / opinions / knowledge about this? And please don't suggest using fresh garlic.....apart from how long it would take chopping enough up for all ours, I don't like it ;D Thanks

I put dried garlic flakes in my horses feeds, and give the dogs a daily garlic pearl, and am convinced that it helps keep flies, fleas and ticks away from them. There are a lot of sheep in the area where I ride, and before it was suggested that I add garlic to the feeds, they and the dogs often picked up sheep ticks. Haven't seen any on any of them since.

Brilliant, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear, thank you Garlic flakes.....not heard of that and sounds good, off to google if dogs can have it too. Presumably a normal horse merchants or is there a good online supplier?

Yes, I get the garlic flakes from the horse feed merchants, although they were having to order them in specially, and they were quite expensive. However, I then discovered garlic chaff, which is a finely chopped hay and oat straw mixture which has garlic flakes and other beneficial herbs added to it. The bags are around 20 - 25 kilos and stink the car out. Not suitable for the dogs, but great for the horses. The garlic pearls I get from Holland and Barrett and the dogs get one each every morning hidden in a knob of butter or bit of sausage meat. They don't even touch the sides and the dogs pester me for their special morning treats if I forget. I actually take a garlic pearl per day myself, too, and love garlic bread and eat that often. Riding through high bracken and swarms of midges on a sweaty horse is asking to be pestered by fly bites and to pick up ticks, and I am sure the garlic helps to keep things at bay.

I keep a couple of bags of the frozen pre-diced stuff in the freezer for when I run out of fresh to use in treats when I'm baking them. It saves on the chopping and stuff too , and it's in most supermarkets now, I can get it from Morrisons here and Sainsburys, should think the others have it too.

Thought an update might be useful and ta for the advice :-)
Bought a bag of garlic flakes and added it to the dogs dinners for 10 days and then reduced it to twice weekly. It works, am delighted as frontline etc weren't doing any good but the garlic certainly has stopped the dogs picking them up thank goodness. Did find a couple of small ticks when I missed a couple of doses recently...so I'll just have to put up with the smell now I know it works so well :-)
