I spotted a new visitor in our garden today - and now I know why the bird seed isn't going down too fast in the feeder I have hanging under the eaves. Please excuse the photo quality - they were taken through a window at a distance.

That is one reason why we are planting thick, fast growing conifers to border our LT bird garden, Ruth. They may be big, and ugly, but they do give the little birds somewhere to dive into cover when the kestrels, sparrow hawks and buzzards appear.
Impressive pictures, though. Is that a tree fallen in the latest storms?

No - it was a large conifer that the previous owners of the house planted (foolishly given how fast it grew and where it was). It grew far too big for it's spot and was embedded in concrete so I can't dig it out. Instead I have cut off all the branches (the sparrowhawk is sitting on a pile of branches) and left three stumps about 5' high. I am looking out for something like some honeysuckle to grow up the stumps and will then hang some bird feeders from it. I'm going to take the branches to my Mum's when I get a chance as she has an open fire so it will save her some heating oil. The greenery in front is the buddleia I bought from TRPD a couple of years ago - I planted that to replace another conifer which was planted in a silly place.

Ah, honeysuckle, eh? ;D I think the Grubby Fingered Gardeners have some for sale... It is time they put some plants into the auction... There are also some more small buddelias, too.

Great photos, Ruth!
Will the Grubby Fingered Gardeners also have a newsletter again one day?? And some indigenous plants for relatively dark gardens would be great for the auction - building the extension (which is not finished yet, by the way) has destroyed our garden!
