Hi Vera, here's one for you, should be right up your street, a rescued sighthound! Actually to be honest we've worked our way through his 'rescue' problems having had Indy for 4 years now. He's a 10ish year old saluki x greyhound and I have tried everything I can think of to improve his recall. I've tried clicker training, he can't be bothered, I've tried whistle recall, he's not interested. He loves his food but not when it comes to recall, toys are useless as well, he's just not interested, there is nothing I seem to be able to do to make myself more interesting to him than anything else out there. He does get off lead exercise in an enclosed park and luckily he seems to have a routine so for the most part I know in advance where he's heading. He's also pretty good about stopping if I shout 'wait' although not 100%. Do you think he might just be a lost cause at his age? I would never dare let him off lead in an open space. Our other lurcher has brilliant recall.
thanks in advance Nettie

Hi Nettie, Not a lost cause at all - just back to basics... I know how you feel, as I have a saluki lurcher too teaching him a decent recall was certainly no easy task ;D Using recall techniques (hide, play, be cheerful etc.) as people do for most breeds don't often work for hounds, particularly independent breeds like the saluki and their crosses! Us boring human beings will never be able to compete with another dog, rabbit or - as in my own lurcher's case - a tram You need to build up your lurcher's recall step by step. Recall needs to become a reflex, not something to think about - as soon as they start thinking they are off As my recall method is quite a long subject, it will take a while to type it, so I hope you can wait a little while?

Thanks Vera, look forward to reading it, don't bust a gut over it, could be useful for others with 'independant' hounds. Rio my lurcher (I believe there is some collie her hence the brains) comes to the whistle.

Hi Nettie, The recall thread is finished and can be read here: petcraftproject.proboards24.com/index.cgi?board=Vera&action=display&thread=1083541983&start=0 And as you probably know as well as I do, many lurchers will never have a 100% recall (unless enormous time and effort is invested). This means that we have to do the same as they do: constantly scan the area for moving things and take action before they do (and that's where the instant recall is necessary). I hope it is useful. Let me know if you have any further questions or any feedback.

I am well practiced at scanning the area for moving things. Its a great shame that we can't let Indy off lead here in France but we haven't got any appropriate fencing up yet. Rio is enjoying pronking around in the long grass, she has 15 acres to exhaust herself in. Luckily she has a bit of collie in her so even though she is a lurcher she is much more eager to please, she also doesn't like being out of sight of us for more than a few seconds. Will certainly get practicing with Indy on my return. Thanks Nettie
