Ollie is a 5 year old neutered male Sprollie who we've had for nearly 4 months now He seems to be great with other dogs and is doing really well particularly as we haven't let him off lead yet as we are still working on his recall and he reacts well to all the other off lead dogs who come bounding over to him even though he is still on lead
But recently we have had a couple of odd experiences (with one dog in particular) which I am trying to work out. On two different occassions we've met a male beagle and a male standard poodle (seperately) whilst over the field (the beagle was on a flexi and the poodle off lead) and Ollie has gone made barking / lunging at them. But in particular he seems to have taken a huge dislike to a male border collie we see locally
Now we have only met this dog whilst pavement walking so both dogs have been on lead but the other owners walk their dog on a flexi lead at full extent on the pavement (which I have to say is pretty annoying). Every time we have met Ollie has gone ballistic - not only barking / lunging but also growling / snarling - a really intense reaction. Now the other dog hasn't reacted but it does seem to me to square up to Ollie initally with a v. tense or rigid body posture so I think there is definately something there that Ollie is reading in it's body language. Now even if we see this dog in the distance Ollie starts up his routine of barking / growling straight away and I usually end up walking in the other direction to avoid them
Anyway what I'm trying to figure out is firstly WHY Ollie is reacting like this to this specific dog and secondly HOW should I react in these situations What I have noticed that all these dogs have in common is that they are:
1) all male
2) all young (the beagle is 18mnths, poodle 2 and collie 1 year)
3) They're all pedigree (not that that's relevant I guess)
4) It's possible that they might not be neutered (but I don't know for sure)
Any ideas?
