Ok so I have three greyhounds, one of whom I already take to obedience classes and one that I would like to (if she ever masters the basic sit - on command that is!!!) How many greyhounds do people know that have got very far in obedience? Emma has her bronze but I'm still working on getting her to sit for periods of time and sometimes I feel that I am being cruel in asking her to do this as it must be uncomfortable. But I never force her - she does it of her own free will! Mind you she isnt daft, if I'm eating a biscuit or something she will come and sit at my feet as if to say, well I'm sitting so do I get a treat? Am I asking too much of her??? Catherine

Just wanted to say that I've known or owned a number of greyhounds and lurchers that couldn't sit at all unless on a cushion. My old girl Snip would rather stand with her chin on my lap and fall asleep than attempt to sit at all. When she did sit on the sofa cushions, she was always angled over so she could lean against the back of the seat. She had a particularly prominent, bony rump. I'd say that if yours chooses to sit of her own free will, then I doubt she finds it too uncomfortable for short periods. I'm sure that Vera will know more about a good trainer's methods and how those vary where greys are concerned. Al

I never ask my Greyhound to sit and my Whippet cross can't hold a sit. He is quite funny his little but goes up and down because he is trying so hard It is common knowledge that Greyhounds have problems sitting and many trainers will allow a good stand to replace it. When she sits on her own accord, how does she she do it? You could put the command on when she does it on her own and reward her instead of teaching in the normal way.

I have a saluki lurcher and do competitive obedience with him. But he has never had problems with a sit and does it voluntarily all the time. I feel that if Emma sits voluntarily for a period of time (for a bicuit), then it is not too much to ask to do it on command as well. If a greyhound does not sit normally, then I wouldn't ask them to either. With my lurcher, all training is done totally pressure free, with mainly treats, but also toys.

I never ask my boys to sit simply because it looks uncomfortable and I wouldn't want to do it. Max sometimes sits before he lies down.
I don't think you're asking to much of her, if she wants to do it she will, if she doesn't, she won't. I tend to use wait instead of sit for crossing roads etc.

I know this is an incredibly old thread, but it's got the correct title I've been rather interested in Greyhounds and Lurchers for quite a while (they are my dogs' favourite "other dogs"!) and am walking the Greyhound of a neighbour at the moment whilst she is unwell - and have totally fallen for that dog (and so has my other half...) Anyway, can the Greyhound and Lurcher specialists here perhaps recommend a book or a website where I can get more into 'the subject'? (As most here will know, I have a "Golden Retriever-look-alike" Newfoundland cross girl and a Springer Spaniel male, both quite old - and a bit different from Greyhounds) (I've already read through the fact sheets on GRWE and will now hop to Greyhounds4U) Thank you very much Jutta

All of Jackie Drakeford's books are excellent, she writes books on house lurchers as well as working ones and she really knows her stuff.

Hi Jutta GRWE have recently published their own book which is called "retired greyhounds" " A guide to care and understanding" Written by Carol Baby who is a behaviouist and does post homing support for GRWE in the south west. Carol has helped me with a few issues that Grace had and she is a wonderful lady. There is even a pic of my greyhound Rocky in there although it will be hard to spot him You can get it from the website www.grweshop.co.uk/ there are several other books on there including one about lurchers as GRWE home lots of those too! In my experience greyhounds and lurhcers can vary quite a lot. Lurchers often have more energy and stamina than greys but may need more excerise and/or mental stimulation. That is of course a generalisation but a grey cross collie lurcher will generally inherit at least some collie traits so you get my drift! If you would like to come and meet some Greyhounds and Lurchers we are doing a collection for GRWE in Bath on Saturday 4/12/10 so come and meet us! ;D

Thank you very much, you two - I'll see that I can get that book and maybe one of the other author, too I'll see if I manage to go to Bath on 4 December (I'm often working at the weekends). If you go to Bath for a collection - do you live relatively near? Since I have a securely enclosed big field.... ;D We do know quite a few Greyhounds and Lurchers, they really are my dogs' favourites and I think one day we will have at least one of the two... (made the big mistake of looking on GRWE's dogs looking for homes page... would like about 5 of them...)

Thanks very much for that link Tissy, I will try to get copies of the first and last books on the site, I have the other two which are good enough books but not particularly detailed I think.
As you say, lurchers and greys can be so different, my lurcher is collie cross and much livelier, more outgoing and brighter than my greyhound, but they have many similar traits too.

I should be on your way to Bath - my field is on the same lane as Sarah Fisher's Tilley Farm (Tellington Touch Centre). So if you come this way - give me a shout! Off now to walk the Greyhound!
