I was hoping to run a Photo Competition, just a small event, to raise funds for some Rescue Horses. Someone mentioned that I may fall foul of the Gaming Laws by doing so, as I was going to charge £1 per entry, entries to be sent by email, with just small prizes for each category (which I would be providing). so, this would be a non'profit, no personal gain, with all money raised from the entry fees going direct to the Horses. Does anyone know the rules on such a competition please? As it is just a one-off competition, on a pretty small scale, would I still need to contact the gaming commission or whatever? thanks in advance for any advice

It is things like raffles, gambling/sweepstakes and lottery-type games of chance, and where no skill is involved that would need a license from the local council. Photo shows are dependent upon some level of skill on the part of the photographer, rather than being games of chance, so no license is required.
If you can imagine holding a horse show by email, and judging classes for showing via photos, you are okay, however, if you had jumping or gymkhana events where the winner's name is drawn out of a hat, and they had paid an entry fee, you would not - but you could do that if you were not charging a fee.
We hold various draws on here, but they are free and for our registered group members only, therefore okay.

As an afterthought, you might be better off doing it via an online forum, rather than entrants not having the opportunity to see the entries made by other competitors. I think much of the fun is seeing those and also getting some feedback from those judging.
That way things can be seen to be open and above board, so are more likely to gain support.

Thank you for your replies I thought I was right that we would be in the exempt category (have done photo shows in the past for local Horse Club, but quite a few years ago, so knew rules had changed). Will have to see how I can set up a forum, then would be able to use it for future competitions too I suppose. Thank you again , Welshtoff

Thank you. I am just in the process of setting up a Forum, similar to this one, but is taking me some time, as I have never attempted anything like this before, and I am a numpty when it comes to anything slightly techy!
If anyone would like to assist in the set-up, you would be more than welcome!

Well, I have decided I must be totally stupid! Have tried all day to set up a forum in a similar style t this (but just to run competitions in) and have had a wasted day. I seem to be going round in circles, and getting nowhere very fast. I knew I was a numpty, but didn't realise just to what degree!
I admire the way you have your forum set up, and congratulate you on doing such a fab job with it!

Hi there, I just don't seem able to add different sections to it, everything is just getting lumped under the label of General for some reason. I will try to sit and watch the Help video, see where I am going wrong. this is the forum; deno-poshcompetition.proboards.com/index.cgiyou will be able to see what I mean then, looks nothing like your lovely lay-out in here.

If I were to register as a member, and you give me an admin position temporarily, and so that I'm able to create categories and boards etc., and you tell me what you want, I could probably do that for you, and unless you can figure it out in the admin section. Let me know.

Al, just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU for all your help. I could never have done it without you. What a fantastic forum this is!
Am I allowed to say where mine is so that peeps can join and enter the competition?

I think some of the members here are looking forward to entering your photo show, so feel free to post the details and a link.
