I've done this with adult dogs successfully by starting with a finger in their mouths for seconds and building up from there. They all have result in good retrievers who don't spit stuff out but... My pup however (5 months) will resist (wriggle and move away) and if I can get the finger (gloved!) into his mouth he will only keep the fnger for what seems less than a second.
I assume I should keep the sessions short but I wonder if he is 'getting' this as he may link the food reward to rejecting the finger not 'holding' it...
any tips wellcome..

I don't know, I've never heard about it being done this way. I always started with the toy/dumbbell (in our case it was actually washing for unloading washing machine / tumble drier) straight away and instead of starting with 'hold' I started with 'give' - very slowly increasing the VERY short time before the 'give' command and the praise/treat. So instead of learning the word/command 'hold' they learn not to drop until the command/word 'give'. Might be useful to change the approach on this pup?

thanks pet designs, the idea is you train the end of the whole exercise (retrieve) first, so that you have a good 'hold' to build on you then train the pick up from the floor and then lengthen the retreive but the 'hold' is established at the beginning.
I was told breaking down an exercise in to small parts makes it easier for the dogs 'little' brain!!!
I tried him with a small cardboard roll with tipbits in it, loo rolls work for bigger dogs with the end turned in to hold the kibble. He is happily holding this for several seconds and gets given his tip bit from the inside so he knows he only gets the food from the inside of the object and only I can give it to him when give me the object. at no point does he think he can take the object away and get the treats himself as he has not seen this an an opportunity.
I am making progress now so thanks!
