The Healing Apple
Apples protect the body’s system in many ways and a glass of apple juice taken three times daily (final glass last thing at night) will help to:
• prevent viral infections
• lower cholesterol levels
• detoxify the blood stream
• clean, strengthen and protect the gums
• neutralise indigestion
• prevent constipation
Pulped apples may be used for poulticing sprains or applied as a soothing antiseptic.
Sufferers of fatigue, rheumatism, gout, poor circulation and related problems will benefit from a regular daily intake of apples (up to 2 lbs.) or apple juice (1 lt.)
Recovery from the common cold will be greatly aided by drinking hot apple juice (or mulled cider) last thing at night. The recipe below has been known to enable a sufferer to ‘sweat out’ a cold overnight, although care should be taken to avoid chills by changing any subsequent damp sheets or nightwear.
Likewise, the same recipe aids weight loss and helps prevent water retention but should only be used in conjunction with a correctly balanced diet.
Crab Apple & Cinnamon Cold Remedy
Ingredients:
• 1/2 pint boiling water
• 2 tablespoons crab apple jelly
• 1 tablespoon cider vinegar
• cinnamon to taste (optional)
• honey to taste (optional but recommended if being made as cold/sore throat remedy.)
Method:
• Add crab apple jelly to boiling water and stir until melted.
• Mix in other ingredients.
Drink hot and preferably while in a warm bed.
Recipe for Crab Apple Jelly
Ingredients.
• Freshly picked, ripe crab apples.
• Water.
• Cane sugar - quantity according to amount of juice extracted from fruit. - 1lb per pint of liquid.
(Sometimes ginger or cinnamon may be added to the juice and cane sugar to enhance the flavour and a delicious breakfast marmalade may be made with a half-and-half mixture of prepared marmalade oranges and crab apple juice.)
Method.
• Thoroughly wash the fruit and cut into pieces.
• Place fruit in a suitably sized saucepan and cover with water and allow to simmer over a low heat and stirring occasionally until fruit is soft and pulpy. Care should be taken to avoid the pan boiling dry. Allow the fruit to cool before next stage.
• Take a clean muslin bag (or clean cotton pillow slip) and fill with the pulped fruit.
• Suspend the bag over a suitable container in which to catch the liquid as it strains through the cloth. Allow to drip for 24 hours.
• Transfer the liquid back into a saucepan, add the correct ratio of cane sugar and boil until a withdrawn sample sets when tested by pouring onto a cold saucer or dish.
• Jelly may now be transferred into pre-warmed jam jars and covered as for jam.
Uses.
On its own with bread or toast.
As an accompaniment to pork or poultry.
As topping for steamed puddings and other dessert uses.
A little melted and used as a glaze for spicy buns or on a fruit loaf is delicious.
As the basis for medicinal drinks.
‘Eat the apple every day to banish aching joints away,
Drink the juice both cool and hot, and winter colds ye shall have not -
But when fermented have a care lest thy soul’s secrets be laid bare.
Should ye partake of excess cider, ‘twill rot thy gut and bring the Ryder
To carry thee away with He to a place I doubt ye’d care to be.’
