There are many forms of self-harm ranging from the damage we, as a species, do to ourselves by our everyday attitude to life and those around us, to inflicting physical harm to ourselves by eating unsuitable foods, drinking to excess, using chemical substances and inflicting injuries on our bodies. Regardless of an individual's means of self-harm, the underlying emotions that cause us to do these things to the extent of causing ourselves harm are the same. The result is that we are unable to achieve our potential and do what we might wish to help those other causes close to our hearts when we are wrapped up in our own emotions, damaging ourselves and suffering as a result. - Al.
Prayer of the Self-Harmer
Lord, Help me to live each day as it comes, To weather the storms of life Safe in the knowledge that these, too, shall pass, And without inflicting greater damage upon The body which you have loaned to me And within which my spirit dwells For the duration of my life on earth.
Forgive me, oh Lord, for the damage that I have Inflicted upon myself, and therefore upon you Through my ignorance and lack of understanding And help me to learn that which you would have me learn That I may do thy will, not mine, and honour you, as I would honour That which you have freely given unto me.
Amen.
