I have never done cross stitch before but I am going away on 20th May for nearly 2 weeks and thought I would like to have a go.
Any ideas for a first timer and any advice? I will pay for it of course, but would like something to occupy my hands while away especially as the evenings are now nice and light.

Margaret, there is a magazine available called 'Cross-Stitch Gallery' from WH Smiths and other good or larger newsagents. That has quite a few small projects in it each moth that are suitable for a novice, besides clear instructions to get you started.
The easiest fabric to start with would be 'aida' and, depending on your eyesight, can be obtained from about 11 count - being 11 stitches to the inch, up to about 22 count or 22 stitches to the inch. Most people go for 14 or 16 count and a size 24 - 26 embroidery needle. For those sizes it is usual to use 2 strands of the 6 strand embroidery thread in the needle.
Once you have the hang of it, it can be very addictive and there is nothing like having a very detailed picture that you have done of a much loved pet hanging on the wall!
