This is one of the new designs that are being worked on and that I thought might be suited for the black aida fabric? It is based on Angie's Tishka... or this... What do you think? Any suggestions on how to improve it? Al

Gosh its beautiful, I like the second one with the detail on the leaf which looks straight forward enough.
If you wanted to add a broad fancy design bright coloured collar then that might be nice for a stitcher to have some different colours to play with. (orange/green Navajo design perhaps?) Just a thought...don't know if it is possible to do that sort of thing.

Thanks, Alison. I'll have a look at the possibilities, but think it may be difficult to add much collar, as it's largely hidden under the dog's ruff, all bar the tag. Al

I also think the second one but don't think you can improve on anything else.

Well, if that's the case, who would like to volunteer to test stitch it? Al

My apologies for the delay sending test stitching charts out. Planned to post them today, but what with becoming a granny, getting a flat tyre and various other chaos, I failed to make it to the PO! However, had to test various PC programmes after the problems, and the make sure they were working okay, I had a little play around and did this draft chart of Bella.(Wonder how long it will be before her mum spots her here? ;D Perhaps someone could tip her the wink? ) I think she looks better without that washing basket on her nose. This could be quite a challenging project to stitch, as quite a lot of subtle shade changes in the design. Al

This is nowt to do with me as I am too numb to do a cross stitch but I just wanted to say that I find the chart for Bella stunning!

Bella's colouring lends itself to charting, Marion and when someone asked me if we had a nice greyhound headstudy for a special card, I thought it would be perfect without the background from the original photo. Turned out the person concerned wanted a black greyhoun one, though! Now having a nightmare trying to find a photo of one that we are allowed to use for the project and that will chart as well as Bella's has! The trouble with the black ones, is they aren't really black at all. It is the subtle shading and reflections from their surroundings that bring them to life and give them character and personality, especially important to a successful chart from a phot is the eye/eyes. However, Marion, if you've never done one before, you could always have a go with a simple little one for a start. It can be quite addictive, too. Al

Wahey it's Bella (my mother-in-law's dog!!!!) Wow thats come up really good!!! I can do cross-stitch, but havent done so for a while!! What would I need to do to do this one!!! Catherine Once it is actually finished as a chart I'll sed you a test copy, Catherine. That will have all the thread information etc on it. I have been attempting to chart the black one, but it isn't coming out as I'd like. Perhaps if you have some others there might be one that would chart better? (Edited to add what I have so far.) I have also been playing around with Emma's picture, too. This one seems to illustrate a point that many people query with the charts, and that is colour choices for the threads. The light reflected on the subject often deceives the average eye/brain. We know that the subject in this case is fawn/cream, yet the camera picks up shades of blue and even violet in the coat. Change those shades and the chart starts to look less realistic, effective and even flat... and yet the brain tells us there's no way a dog has either blue or violet in its coat! So many super designs disappoint me for that reason when I see them in books or catalogues when the colours have been altered to try to 'get them right' and according to what the brain says! Of course, the whole thing when finished looks very different to the colours shown in the picture above, and from a distance when viewed across a room, they look stunning. Al

After a quick play around with one of Catherine's photos of Millie, here are two examples... and On the first, with the white background, there is NO true shade of black at all. On the second version, the darkest grey shade has been changed to black. Not really sure which version I prefer. Anyone want to comment on which they prefer? Neither version will please the original person who asked for a black greyhound chart! Al
