It's been very quiet down at the allotment for the last couple of days, and since the morning when I discovered that Gerry, the old gander, had passed away during the night.
As ganders go, Gerry had a lovely nature around people he knew, liked his neck stroked and to help himself to the feed from the container as I went down the path to feed all the poultry. He was a real old character, bless him. I can only hope he'll find a mate in the wide open spaces over the Rainbow Bridge.
Even now, Scampi is still nervously looking over his shoulder as he dashes into the various sheds to look for eggs - that just in case Gerry's on his tail. The ducks, however, are getting used to being without their big pal and having him leading the way to the water boshes for their daily ablutions.
I do miss him honking his greetings to me - especially in the evenings, when he would see me coming down the track and be ready and waiting for his bit of bread treat at the allotment gate.
