Gables Farm Dogs’ and Cats’ Home, the oldest animal welfare charity in Plymouth, is urging people, both young and old, to don their trainers in aid of its Welfare Kennel Appeal at this Autumn’s 8km Run and 3km Fun Run. It is hoped that hundreds of keen athletes, as well as enthusiastic runners, will turn out for the Gables Gallop and help the home raise over £100,000 by the end of December 2006, so that it can build a new kennel and create more space to house the increasing number of unwanted or stray dogs on their waiting list.
The scenic Gables Gallop, which is held twice a year, will take place on Sunday, 23 October at Saltram House, with runners under starter’s orders at 10.30. The Fun Run will kick off slightly later at 10.45.
There are medals for all finishers, with a Winners cup being presented at the end of the 8Km race. In May, over 100 runners took part in the Gables Gallop, with representatives from the Tamar Trotters, Carn Runners, Plymouth Harriers and Instinctive Sports helping to raise £480.
“We’re hoping to encourage more people to participate in the last Gables Gallop of the year, whether they be experienced runners, gentle joggers or those who would rather walk around the course with their dogs or young families, so that we can make it our best run yet. We also desperately need volunteers to come forward to help with the marshalling and ensure that the event is as safe and successful as it can be.” Says Lynn Henwood, Marketing Assistant, Gables Farm Dogs’ and Cats’ Home.
Organised under UK Athletic Rules, the cost is £5 for affiliated runners and £6 for unattached athletes. Only runners over 15 years old can enter the 8km run, but any age can enter the Fun Run for £2.50, a three year old was the youngest to take part last year!
For an entry pack or to volunteer your time, please contact Lynn Henwood at Gables Farm on 01752 342 410. Registration can be done in advance or on the day (after 9.30 am) for an extra £1.
