‘Thanks, Jo but, if you really want to play games and be convincing, try dressing for the part next time – oh, and don’t forget to have a bath. You smell like horse sweat and stable manure.’ ‘Thanks a bunch! And there was me thinking you needed these in a hurry.’ ‘Sorry, kid but it’s true. You’ve also left bits of hay on the carpet and there’s still some in your hair – and cobwebs.’ ‘I’ve been helping them stack hay up in the loft at the stables. The beams were covered in dust and things.’ Jo leaned over and ruffled her dark, urchin-cropped mop to rid it of possible invaders. ‘There, is that better?’ ‘It will be if you fetch the vac and clean up after yourself.’ Instead Jo leaned over Jamie’s shoulder, reading the agency vacancies that he had up on the computer screen. ‘I could do that,’ she said, pointing. ‘What? You work in a solicitor’s office? Get real!’ Section of another story ‘They’re only advertising for an office junior.’ ‘So what? They’d take one look, or get a slight whiff of you, and show you the door.’ ‘Do you want to bet?’ she said eagerly. ‘Sure! 10 to 1 says you won’t get through an interview.’ Jo pulled out the two ten pound notes and slapped them onto Jamie’s desk. ‘And that says they’ll offer me the job!’
