Pod is coming to stay again this weekend, although I am a little bit worried about her. She has been with us for a couple of weekends lately, although after she went home the last time she started to 'chew' her back legs making them bleed. She has had a bath in Puppy shampoo but is still at it, she looks such a mess. Well I suppose I will have to keep my fingers crossed and sacrifice another pair of shoes or slippers to give her legs a break! Does anybody have any ideas on how to this self harming dog?

First of all I'd take Pod to the vet to see if she has an allergy (e.g. even if only one single flea bit the reaction might be like that, for example or maybe she got something to eat at yours that she never gets at home??) or any other health problem (hot spot? Pain somewhere - which often leads to chewing an paws/legs? ....). Only if that has been cleared would I think of any behavioural 'problem'.

Just to let you know that Pod collapsed in the garden on Friday morning and was taken to the vets. They have ran some tests and they think she has got epilepsy. They will get the results on Monday. They think that the leg bitting could be due to mites and has got to have a skin scraping on Tuesday.
Will be going to give her big kisses and cuddles later.

Big hugs for you and Pod. Epilepsy covers a lot of things and not many dogs have true epilepsy, the seizures are usually caused by something else. Sometimes we find the reasons, sometimes we don't. Joe has seizures caused by allergies, he has so many it is rediculous and last summer I discovered that he was having seizures because of the heat so this summer I have him on Serene-um which has managed to keep his brain calm. Other causes for Joe are all dairy products, raw meat, fern spores, low blood sugar and every so often he shows to another alergy. There are many causes besides what Joe has, Tommy used to have seizures but we never found out the reason for hers but she did get hyper active for a few days before she had one so I would give her Serene-um which stopped the seizure developing. Most vets automattically put a dog that has a seizure onto phenabarb or something similar but these drugs can cause more problems with other parts of a dog so need to be used with extreme caution. If Pod is chewing her back leg, I would suspect she is allergic to something, I may be able to help a little but the lady who helped me with Joe, may be able to help Pod. She is very experienced with this type of thing, she is epileptic herself and has a Phd from an American University for Animal Homeopathy. Sam is also a member of this board but hasn't posted yet, gave her a kick up the bum the other day for not posting If you are interested in talking to Sam, doesn't do any halm to speak on the phone then you can decided which way to go, then I can pm you her telephone number. Seizures are terrible to see, I should be used to them but I don't think I will ever be, especially as hubby is also epileptic since his stroke. Whatever you decide to do, please let us know what the test results were.

What tests have they done? (As you can't actually test for epilepsy - epilepsy can only be diagnosed if all other possible reasons for seizures have been excluded, at least to my knowledge)
Fingers are firmly crossed for Pod that they find out what it all is and that they can help him!!

Hi,
Thanks for all your help, Pod has had a scraping and the vet has said that she has had a mite allergy. The blood tests are back and her liver and kidneys are fine, but her white blood cells were high and has got antibiotics.
She has got a go back on Friday, her owners have been told to keep an eye on her eating, drinking etc. They were told by the vet that she did have a fit which could be down to an infection or something although the vet has told them that she thinks Pod may have a brain tumor.
We are all going on holiday together next week so will get a chance to give her lots of cuddles and it looks like I have got the job of bathing her legs.
Will keep you posted.

Hi everyone,
Haven't been around lately but thought I would let you know that Pod is much better. We went camping about a month ago with Pod and her owners and she was poorly while we were away. They found a vet and had her looked at and the vet said she had a water infection. The vet gave her different antbiotics and it seems to have done the trick, and has even helped to clear up the bites on her legs.
Better go now as she is staying again from tomorrow so I have to go and hide all the shoes I can.
