... has a swollen paw and is feeling thoroughly miserable. However, he is supposed to rest the paw, but try telling him that! It's all very well when he's on the sofa, but, although he starts out for a short walk to water the grass limping on, although not carrying, the paw by the time he's around the corner, he's barely showing lame. It really is quite swollen but I'm not sure if giving him the painkillers/anti-inflammatories is wise or not? Are those actually masking the pain and encouraging him to use it more than he should?

I guess that depends on why the paw is swollen. Rather than anti-inflammatory & pain killers, just give an anti-inflammatory, reducing the swelling should reduce the pain. Hope he's back on all four paws soon

Do you think he might have got something stuck in his paw thats made it swell or is it actually the joint which is swollen?

Whoops, sorry Amy - hit modify not reply then! We've found nothing at all in the paw, Amy, and no cuts etc. He is prone to foot problems, which is why he was homed to me originally, as no longer suitable for working. Trouble is, no one has managed to convince Scampi of that! He chased a rabbit through a thicket the day the injury happened. At the same time, he cut and scratched his hind legs and tail. Didn't cry out or scream then like he does when the cockerals, hens or Gerry the gander chase him, though!

I really don't know what to make of it because it is clearly swollen and, after rest, he is noticably lame, but then the lameness seems to become less obvious during exercise, and he forgets about it if he sees something he wants to chase, or fancies trying to beat me to the chickens' nest boxes! He had a history of such problems when he came to me two and a half years ago, and has had a broken toe and a missing claw on the other paw. The vet doesn't seem to think it is anything serious. Will take him back early next week if it persists. If it was a hind leg, I'd put it down to all the little cuts and scratches he has there after charging through a bramble bush after a bunny!

I hope it isn't anything serious Al, and that whatever it is, clears up or is easily treatable. Get better soon lil Scampi

Thanks, Amanda. Scampi's a bit prone to foot trouble and it seems he's strained a toe ligament. It is healing slowly and he's not as lame now.

The last I heard, Jack, aka Mr Meldrew, was stuggling to find something to moan about! Living in peace and quiet, and getting paid for it, and with enough time on his hands to play with a vaccum cleaner and a cobweb brush, too... yes, he's been caught doing housework, if not wearing a pinafore! He complained a bit that he didn't have enough to do, so perhaps life isn't all that perfect? Must have caught him on a bad day, I guess? ;D
