this may sound like a silly question but how do you get involved in the actual making of items, where do people get their patterns from etc etc?

That depends upon what you want to make. Some things, such as pet duvet covers, hardly need a pattern, just a measuring tape and enough skill to make a pillowslip.
For coats in a standard style, there are fairly simple, average dog proportions, and based upon a rectangle, you can soon make up a pattern that can be enlarged or reduced proportionately, and according to the size you need to make. Greyhound/whippet styled coats are a little more complicated, as those require a dart and shaping, and for some breeds, you need two rear darts if they have particularly square quarters. Deep fitting coats, broad chested breeds etc., also need adjustments to the patterns, but not difficult.
One thing I hope to do, as time allows and if there's a demand, if to cut out some 'outers' to sell as a pack, so that those wanting to make coats up simply need to cut matching linings for those, which is a good way to obtain your patterns, too. My original ones were cut out of old cotton sheeting, and worked out from finished coats that I laid out flat and marked around. Some members sent me old coats that I took those from, then passed the original coats on to rescues through the repair & recycling project.
Harnesses are also made to average measurement proportions, and then those sizings adjusted a bit for dogs that are deeper/broader or have different neck to body length ratios.
If you need specific questions answered, feel free to ask, and I'll do my best to help.
