FOR BRUNO IT REALLY IS `LIFE AND LIMB`
poshpussrescue.org/BRUNOAPPEALPAGE.aspx
Bruno's current situation
Bruno is the mascot dog for Bully Befrienders. He is in urgent need of help for his left front leg without which it will soon collapse and Bruno would be left with no front limbs at all. The only way that is left to help Bruno is to raise the massive sum of three thousand pounds which has been quoted as minimum costs at Fitzpatrick Referrals in Surrey where Noel Fitzpatrick has kindly offered to involve his own theatre time for free to help Bruno by performing an elbow fusion.
Bruno has been here for just a few months. He is enjoying family life and is very happy in spirit. He loves to watch the rest of the dogs play and is never a martyr. However, his mobility is severely impaired and he can only do a few steps and roll over. Xrays taken by my regular veterinarian show how shocking the skeletal structure of Bruno's left leg is. He is basically being supported by soft tissue as it appears, according to their analysis, that a breakage occurred in this leg too, probably around the same time as the other breakage and the bones have never fused. Why this leg was overlooked is not at all clear. I have managed to talk to the lady who relinquished Bruno for rehoming and she has said that she was not told of any damage to the right front leg. She was only warned that if Bruno got overweight the leg would take unneccesary strain. Bruno is not overweight, hence there is a mystery. There has also been arthritic degeneration in this limb making it likely that the bones will crumble. Bruno has been treated by my vets with pain killers only as they say the leg is not fit for surgery. Fitzpatrick Referrals is a centre of excellence in high technology and this is why they are his only hope.
BRUNO'S HISTORY AS WE KNOW IT:
First home where Bruno had the leg breakage - in the Midlands - details unverified. Breakage occurred here and was left untreated.
Second Home: second and third owners: As a three month old pup he was rehomed to a lady who saw him and fell in love with him but at the time of taking him in Bruno had an untreated broken leg which was dangling. ( I await photos) His new owner took Bruno to the PDSA hospital where this leg was amputated. The notes indicate that the left leg did not feel normal. However, oddly, no treatment was carried out or advised on this particular limb. The lady owner who had been living with her mother decided to leave home but dogs were not allowed at her new accommodation. Hence Bruno continued to live with the first owner's mother who became his new owner and her other dog. Bruno was passed to a rehoming organisation in the Midlands area when the second owner found that she was unable to afford to keep two dogs.
BRUNO IN CORNWALL:
I offered to take on Bruno as I keep rescue dogs for rehoming in my home as part of the family and thus life is more stimulating than kennels for them. Bruno stayed briefly at kennels whilst awaiting various transports down to Cornwall.
Bruno looked quite sad upon arrival but in no time perked up and looked much happier. He obviously enjoys home life and is great with cats and loves human company. If I am away from him for too long or if he does not have the company of one of the other dogs he will wolf howl. He loves joining in activities to the best of his ability and on his bad days I wheel him in a push chair up to the local amenity area where we sit on the grass together and watch the sea. Each day I drive him to the woods where he has the exercise he can cope with. I sometimes drive him to my friend's smallholding where he loves to wander in the field and integrate with the other dogs. He has a good quality of life and his spirit is high. He has plenty to live for.
Welfare wise, I am doing all that I can possibly do to get the surgical intervention and high expertise that Bruno needs. It is a lot of money but who can put a price on a precious life of a sentient being? By sharing involvement and support we could work together and help Bruno through this critical period in his life facilitating his mobility and pain free future. Without intervention his prognosis will be tragic.
After tracing and speaking with Bruno's third ex owner by telephone it seems that Bruno is in fact between two and three and not three and four as I earlier said. This makes it even more of a travesty that this lovely dog should lose his life due to his limb problem. Work on his leg is extremely urgent as further deterioration may render it undoable. Please help me to help Bruno. Ways in which you can help are listed under the photos:
Bruno on his arrival
Bruno with his new family and friends
Bruno in the woods. He cannot run like the other dogs but he loves to go and sit and watch them all play. He never plays the martyr but loves life and joining in as much as he can
If Bruno loses this limb he loses his life. Please help Bruno in any way you can.
