Well, the pair have been on great form since yesterday. Really active and funny. When I clean them out, and having given up using shavings on the floor, as they send showers of that out of the cage and all over the floor, I usually put a thick layer of newspaper on the floor of the cage and at base level, followed by a deep pile of shredded junkmail paper. Yesterday, as soon as they went back into the cage, they had their usual fun and games and play-fights in that, but then decided to extract the thick, bottom layer of flat paper, rip that into bits, and sleep under it and on the plastic floor of the cage. One corner they seem to favour as a toilet and, having now mounded a great deal of paper up in that corner, they now seem to be attempting to perfect the art of emptying their bowels through the cage bars! In fact, by backing up into that corner, and lengthening their hind legs as they 'perform', one seems to have achieved a record pooping height of 6"! Perhaps the answer will be to put the thick layers of paper outside their cage and especially under that corner? After a very active morning, they are now both fast asleep stretched out side by side in the shredded paper. Hobnob on his back with is hind legs wide apart, Choccy on her side alongside him, and with her head nestled into his throat. I can't imagine that they have much more growing to do, but there's a big difference between their sizes now, and those who have remarked that Choccy is big for a ferret, would likely think Hobby's a giant! Side by side as they are, he seems to dwarf her! Even the breadth of his head seems massive compared to hers.

Well, they have had their breakfasts this morning and are now playing, what I call, their snakes and mongoose game. Having such long, flexible bodies capable of rearing up to quite a height, they will weave and gyrate in front of one another, then pounce on their opponent and writhe around on the floor of the cage with those long bodies entwined, nipping at each other's necks, arching and rolling around for ages. There was a TV nature programme on a while ago that showed, I think, either young weasels or stoats at play, and the ferrets are very similar but, of course, much easier to watch as they are captive. I can hardly wait for them to discover what extra fun they can have when given more space down in the feedroom. Mind you, I will miss watching their antics here, if not the mess they can make! You wouldn't believe how much shredded paper can find its way out through the cage bars, let alone other things!

After their mutual fun and games today, Choccy took herself off to the hammock for a nap but Hobby was still full of himself and decided, of all things, to play on his own and... would you believe it... by chasing his own tail! He wasn't just spinning around as a dog does, but writhing around and turning somersaults on the floor of the cage as he grasped it! It was hilarious watching him.

When Hobby finally decided to join his sister in the hammock, he must have been shattered, as he left his hind legs, tail and a bit of bottom dangling out the end. Over the space of about an hour, these bits gradually extended to various amounts of tummy, and until suddenly the whole of him seemed to slide out and flop into a heap on the cage floor! He must have been comatose again, because he didn't wake up! He has since, and is fine, but now, having had his tea and another play, is fast asleep again!

I don't know about a kids story, but today there is a nose and a dark brown little paw hanging out of the hammock. If the rest of Hobby follows, he'll be hitting the floor of the cage head first this time!

I have tried taking photos of them in the house, but they just don't seem to come out, however, once they move quarters, I should be able to get some decent ones, as the light will be better. They look very like polecats, the way they are marked. Have to laugh at the moment. Choccy is up on the platform scoffing, but Hobby's in the hammock and has his tail and hind feet poking out! Every now and again he has a little stretch and a shuffle, as if to try and avoid slipping out again. I guess he's not in his deepest sleep level for now. ;D

Piccies when they move! My son told me today that he has found a home for the original ferret pair, and parents to Hobby & Choccy. He'd forgotten about the Honey Monster though! Apparently they are going at the weekend... Typical, because I was fed up with paying extra for small quantities of ferret food, so today bought a 15 kilo sack of the stuff for not much more than twice the price of a 2 kg bag! I hope it doesn't go off before however many are left can scoff their way through that much! Thought we'd lost the JRT earlier today. She's discovered she can jump onto the wall and escape into the gardens now.

Laughing myself into stitches right now. Hobnob is playing at being a crocodile! He's got his teeth into the end of the hammock's fabric (old denim) and is twisting over and over just like a croc, and as if trying to dislodge a chunk of it. Every now and again he lets go, and the twists spin out again. Choccy just made a dive out of the hole at the top, leapt on Hobby as he was twisting over and over, then tried to leap back inside the hammock. She missed, and went right over the top because the hole had closed a bit!

A couple of days ago, I hung an old knitted bag up in the ferret cage, and slightly resembling one of those chair things that hand from the ceiling on a chain, and that used to be considered the height of fashion. Well, at this moment, Choccy is reclining in it, with her tail and hind paws poking out and the opening above closed and together, due to the weight suspended in it. Every now and again that opening pops open and Choccy peeps out as she busies herself grooming her exposed belly! Hobby is out for the count in the other hammock, but he was curled up in the knitted bag earlier and looking somewhat squashed.
