I got my beautiful Greyhound from The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary in Ireland . MJ, does marvelous work with the rescued Greyhounds there and I have chosen it because all the dogs there deserve whatever we can donate. They have all had a tough life before arriving at The Orchard Sanctuary where they will experience love and Care , probably for the first time ever. MJ, wrote the Following about her Greyhound Sanctuary...........
"The Orchard Greyhound Sanctuary began in September 2004 as a simple fostering program for other rescues which had greyhounds in need. Located in rural south Offaly, it is presently the only greyhound rescue in Ireland where the dogs live in a home environment as opposed to a kennel environment. This greatly increases their adoptability straight into a permanent home. The sanctuary also specializes in taking in greyhounds in very poor condition. The initial single-dog fostering grew into what it is today because, over time, the ease with which the greyhounds taken in here adapted to "rescue" in a home environment became evident.
Using a "pack" method to instill good behaviour, currently there are 12 rescue dogs in the care of the sanctuary, 10 of them tatooed greyhounds. The pack method reduces the likelihood of fighting and allows most of the dogs to run loose as a pack on 2+ enclosed acres - the exceptions to this being new dogs who are in poor condition and will be introduced to the pack slowly. With the help of my own three dogs' good behaviour and steady characters (two greyhounds and an Irish Wolfhound) as a model for incoming dogs to follow, greyhounds are more likely to be adopted when they project confidence, affection, adaptibility, and already have some degree of training. From February 2005-February 2006, nine greyhounds were homed to Irish families or individuals, and fourteen greyhounds in total were homed in Ireland and abroad. For the first full year, this is a promising start! "
