Kate paused at the edge of the shingle and wished, not for the first time, that she owned a dog. Ahead, barely visible in the half-light of dawn, the man strode resolutely towards where Dolphin Rock reared up and out over the incoming tide.
Pulling her coat closer against the blustery wind, Kate hurried forward muttering, ‘Damn, him! I’ve no wish to spend Christmas morning calling out the coastguard or witnessing some idiot swept off the rock to his death – or is that what he wants?’
Kate shuddered as memories flooded her mind sending automatic messages to her legs. Faster! Faster! Until suddenly she stood behind and below him, looking upward, hesitating as she tried to think what to say. Afraid to startle him and uncertain of his intentions, yet knowing she had to speak. Why can’t you sense my presence? she thought, willing him to turn around.
‘Excuse me,’ she said at last, ‘I’m not in the habit of speaking to strangers but…’
He turned with speed and the agility of a dancer to glare down at her. Only then did she recognise him. It must have shown on her face for his twisted into a sardonic smile of acknowledgement.
‘But what?’ he said. ‘If you’re about to tell me this coastline’s dangerous, forget it. I like to live dangerously – or didn’t you know? Don’t you read the papers in this godforsaken hole?’
