My mother used to collect stray tortoises when I was a child! They were great characters. Eventually she had to pass them all over to a rescue though, and as old age and ill health affected her. I gather quite a few are still surviving, too! Mum is now well into her 80s, and I was only about 8 years old when the first one arrived - found on waste ground by my father, who worked as a surveyor for the Ordinace Survey! That tortie was always known as Mr. Tortoise, and the next to arrive was Mrs. Tortoise! Boy did they get together fast! As a child, I always believed that torties were responsible for the term 'bonking', and that I'd invented that word, as if my bedroom window was open, I could hear them at it out in the garden! Mum once tried hatching their eggs in the airing cupboard, but nothing ever came of the attempt. Sometimes she'd be tidying up the garden and forking things over and discover nests of eggs long buried by the tortoises, though. I guess they lived in hope of a family, but maybe thought that all the new strays that arrived were their offspring?
