Oh of course I understand that owners of certain breeds might be a bit nervous, but when we are talking about Jack Russells and Wheaten Terriers I think the owners underestimate the ability their dogs have to stand up for themselves, and also to do damage to bigger dogs. The size of a JR or similar means it can get right under a larger dog and get to the throat (or personal bits if it is a male!) and I believe that is why some larger dogs are nervous of smaller ones. When Fly runs up to a dog/owner she is wagging her tail between her legs, holding her head low, and anyone who thinks her actions are aggressive really needs to look into learning about dog language. Fly has been bitten a few times (always by terriers) so although she can't help trying to make friends she is very submissive.
The other day someone picked up a Staffie pup when Fly went towards them, and she wasn't even heading for the dog, it was obvious she was just trotting past on her squirrel hunt. Staffies need socialization, not to think that dogs are something to be nervous of.
The only real dog fight I have ever had to split up was between a yorkie and a JR! But I realise that I have been lucky.
My Whippet (the one in my avatar), Whizz, was run into by a collie cross not much bigger than her, and she was paralysed from the middle of her back. After tests she had to be PTS, so that makes me nervous about Fly running with any dogs at all, but I can't wrap her up in cotton wool either!
We are lucky, the park we walk in every morning has the same people walking their dogs there every day, the very few trouble makers don't go back after their dogs have caused trouble, probably they are too embarrassed! We all know each other's dogs, and those few who know their dogs don't get on with each other can easily avoid meeting.
Very few Staffie owners go there, which I am glad about, although I like the breed and believe they can be good dogs, most of the people who own them aren't interested in giving their dogs enjoyment, just in parading them around the streets to look tough, which is a shame for the dogs.

I just knew that my comment about the small dog's being picked up like handbags would upset someone , it was not really meant to annoy or upset anyone, it is as said people who do own dog's should really also learn about Dog Body Language, then maybe large and small dog's could get on so much better. I know when to call my rather long legged, clumsy six month Lurcher back from a dog and Yaygo ( said Lurcher pup) has learnt from me calling him back to approach dog's in different ways, he knows not to charge and jump all over a small dog and he is a very gentle lurcher for his age and size, he also knows when to get out of the way of an aggresive dog, this has been taught to him by letting him approach dog's as he has grown via a flexi lead and him being allowed to socialise this way he has learnt manners. I did state that I had nothing against the smaller breeds but I don't appreciate them being allowed to run over and nip my dog's or try to start a fight with them. Can we please keep this a happy little topic, I only started it so that I could get to see other peoples dog's and to hopefully get to know more people on here, I had no intention of annoying anyone. Adore your whippets by the way Anne and hope they adapt to the move, your crew is gorgeous too Carmel, keep the photo's coming please, I do check in, I have just missed a few days recently due to the passing away of a dear friend. Love and Light Viv and the Dog's.

Just an update on my rescued lurcher, because I am still wondering if anyone has any idea what his lurcher sire could have been ?, he is 6 months old in this photo and is with my 2 kelpies, he is going through another growth spurt and all I can tell you is that his dam was a Bedlington cross Whippet. I adore him and no matter what he ends up like he is with me and my clan forever. Love and Light Viv and the Dog's. x Attachments:

Well these are my little babies. I love them to bits and wouldn't be without them. I love to see them run free and join in the play of other dogs, big and small. Don't worry Viv, I haven't taken any offence, I know what you are saying, I've seen it myself. My dogs socialise with big and small dogs alike although sometimes I have to put Rebus on a lead to walk past a bigger dog cos he'll shoot the other way (backwards) and I can't run after him lol. They all came from private rescue, Rebus being the last one in. They had never seen or mixed with dogs other than their own breed, so he is a bit wary of larger dogs atm in case they chase him, but we are getting him through this by walking him up to the calmer bigger dogs and letting them sniff and interact, so that he can see not all big dogs are scary and will chase him. He's getting there bless him. Dolly, my smallest, is the bravest and most confident and will approach any dog unless it shows her signs not to, but she is easily called back. Poppy bless her, is so laid back she is horizontal and simply doesn't care. She gets on with anything and everything and I would trust her implicity to be left in the same room as small furries. So here we are - my babies Rebus Poppy Dolly

Hi Alfie1, some cute Cavvy's you have living with you, they are such intelligent little dog's too if people give them the chance to show them, I have seen quite a few doing agility and obedience, so they are bright little sparks . It does knock quite a bit out of a dog or pup if it has had bad times in the past with larger dog's, my kelpie youngster was chased when she was approx 5 months old, it happened 5 times in the space of 3 months and she just went to pieces, I have had to work extra hard with her to build up her courage again around any dog's and she is still a shy lass now. All this world needs is responsible, sensible and caring dog owners and we would not have a problem. Thanks for sharing your photo's. Love and Light Viv and the Dog's. x

Ooh lovely dogs alfie, I grew up with King Charles and they are great dogs. Fly has a great friend who is a Cavvy, he is called Oscar and he is dearly in love with her, even though when he gets carried away he only gets as far as her hocks!
Presumably your wee guys have come from KC breeders and that's why they weren't used to dogs of other breeds? Must have been a shock for them to find out that not all dogs looked like them!
I know a collie who is terrified of other dogs, he was attacked by some German Shepherds a couple of times and now he slinks away to hide in the bushes when he passes another dog. He is used to Fly now and doesn't mind sniffing hello with her but if he hears her barking with excitement he takes a day or two to forgive her!

It is a very scary thing for a young dog ( well any dog really ) to be attacked by other's, my youngest kelpie sticks close to me when other dog's come close or are approaching us but if she gets to walk round the park with them several times she eventually seems to allow them into the clan and will trot around quite nicely with them but if one shows any aggression then she is back to square one again . At the moment me and my dog's walk round with a lovely lass and her Whippet and he loves nothing better than to run around with my kelpie youngster and she is happy for him to do so, which is really nice to see, hope it keeps this way and the more the merrier then, fingers crossed anyway . x

Ooh lovely to see more Cavaliers It's so hard when small dogs and large dogs meet up - we have Cavaliers and have had SO many occasions where large dogs have bounced on them, I know sometimes it's only play but it can be quite terrifying for a small dog, especially one with a prior history of being attacked. I had a very nervous Cavalier who we worked with for months and months and got her confident with other dogs - it was all ruined when a Labrador and JRT bounced all over her one day My dogs were on the lead, and the others were loose - they wouldn't even call them back. I can see the other side too - it must be confusing for a large dog to have a small dog yapping and running through their legs. We try to socialise ours with larger dogs at classes. Sadly there are too many irresponsible dog owners out there with dogs of all sizes!! Anyway this is the old dear, Fufu - I foster her for a friend, she was 12 recently, this was taken a couple of years ago. www.pbase.com/trevorhughes/image/104644727/original.jpg [/img]
