I was sorting out my craft stuff last night, and at the back of the cupboard I found some fleece offcuts. So I thought I'd put them to good use and make some dog toys. I just cut out simple bone shapes and sewed them together. I added a squeaker too (I always keep a stash of these because I'm forever replacing them in Pippa's toys!) I've made 6 so far (7 if you include one that Pippa ran off with! ) Here are some of them I will be using them as quiz prizes. Hopefully I will make some more tomorrow - it's quite relaxing making them

These look brilliant, Julie, well done. ( ...Now I wonder if this means Julie would welcome the next bag of offcuts from here? Some of the waterproof ones might be great for tossing around at the park or in the fields?

Lol that sounds great Al, thanks. Waterproof toys sound a great idea I must admit they're quite addictive to make. The only trouble I'm having is keeping them out of sight of Pippa, my toy mad Springer Spaniel

I know the feeling, Julie. I relax best when sewing - as long as I don't have to think too much about what I'm making. Why not try some other shapes - I used to make them animal shaped but flatter and a bit like those cutters that did biscuits - but bigger. Just two pieces of material joined together and stuffed with scrap material bits. If I can find the old patterns I'll cut some out for you to work from, if you like? I had cats, dogs, ponies, a lion and a teddy shape! Dogs would love them if they squeak.

Some patterns would be great Al thanks I'm a bit limited on the shapes I can do at the moment as the offcuts I've got are all very narrow - hence the bone shapes I will try some different shapes once I have some bigger offcuts Hopefully the dogs will like them - they're a sucess with Pippa anyway She's currently curled up asleep resing her head on the toy I made She won't let it out of her sight!

heart shapes are good as well especially with valentines day approaching. A word of caution though if you are going to be posting them out to rescues as prizes, don't use the material off cuts as stuffing, they aweigh surprisingly heavy and increase postage costs, much better to use duvet stuffing, far lighter to post.

They'd be for bigger dogs - greyhounds/lurchers to play with.

I've seen some on eBay, although never bought any. Viv (Puddin Face!!!) might know a source, and would be worth asking. I think she and another member made some toys a few years ago with them inside, but could be confused.

Al do you sell offcuts of fleece and waterproof fabric for toy making? We're doing some fund raising for research into the devestating Syringomyelia which affects Cavaliers and other breeds, and thought if we could make some simple soft toys to sell that would be great.

Brill Ta... I have been plaiting raggies for the dogs too...mine love tags on toys so I thought why not make a whole toy of tags...
Found the best material for not fraying to be polyester dresses/skirts your granny wears cut into strips and plaited together, then plaited again for strength...
Done thinner ones with bells on for cats and material that frays for the bird cage, my cockatiel loves it...

For some reason I missed this post, Nicki. I'll sort a bag of off-cuts for toys out for you Nicki and send them to your address. Have some half-moons down in the workshop that, when four are joinded togather, and plaits made for arms and legs, plus felt eyes, make a sort of Humpty-Dumpty toy. Terrorist here loves things like that, but she and the collie wreck them fighting over them... my socks, too!
